If we only pine after what is possible and ideal, we will become airy, romantic, and completely removed from the embodiment of life. So these questions of practice remain: What are the tools by which you stay grounded but not buried in the ground? And what are the tools by which you are lifted but not removed from all that is real? Staying grounded but not buried and lifted but not removed is how we repair, reimagine, and rebuild the world.

I've Been Thinking...

I just had one of those weeks, but I don't mean what you think.

Usually when someone says “I had a week,” they mean that things were tough, overwhelming, or stressful for them. And Lord knows we’ve all experienced a lot of those feelings lately. In fact, if you were glued to the news this past week, you probably felt all those things as you were inundated with stories about supply chain woes, the devastating news from the Astroworld Festival, record inflation numbers, and yet more stories about our fragile democracy and the former president trying to block his records from going to the bipartisan committee investigating what happened on January 6, 2021.

I heard all those stories this past week as well, but on my birthday last Saturday, I told myself that whenever I get anxious about the news of the day, I need to stop, pause, and listen to myself instead. Listening is an art, and for decades it’s been my job to listen, learn, and share what I’ve learned. But it wasn’t until late in life that I afforded the same listening skills that I brought to my journalism career to myself.

Moody People Nearby? Let Your Energy Make Them Smile!

I recently made plans to meet a few friends for dinner. It’s been such a long time since we’ve gotten together and we were all feeling upbeat and ready for a night out at our favorite restaurant. As we were all catching up with each other’s lives, the waitress came to take our order.

It was pretty obvious that our waitress was having a bad day. She was less than friendly and not hiding how irritated she was. Instead of getting upset, irritated or angry myself, I decided to use a technique that I was taught many years ago. I still use it whenever I encounter someone who is angry, annoyed or just in a bad mood.

I decided to send the waitress positive, calming energy with my thoughts and surround her with white light. I took a moment to imagine this positive light entering her heart center. I did this as she took our order.

When our food was ready, the waitress brought it to our table and you could see she was more engaging. Her face was less tense and she actually began to laugh with us!

When the waitress left our table, my friends looked at each other and then at me. “Did you do something, John?” I told them I just sent her positive energy to help ease her mood, and possibly help her have a better night.

Small Things With Great Love

Mother Teresa said, “We cannot do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” In my experience, the smallest things require the greatest love. The smallest things we do are the intimate and personal choices we make each moment before we act. These choices are always between the intention of love and the intention of fear – between gratitude, caring, and patience, among others, and anger, jealousy, righteousness, among others.

These choices appear to us as as the smallest of small things, as interior experiences that we alone can enter and alter. Yet with our choices of love or fear we create the consequences of our lives and the contributions we make to the world. These choices are the origins of all things, great and small, they alone animate the one who chooses. You are the one who chooses.

I've Been Thinking...

It was my birthday yesterday, and I've gotta say, I feel so blessed this year. 

I feel blessed to be alive. Blessed that my children are healthy and that they all came home to celebrate with me! Blessed that my granddaughter lights up when I walk into a room! Blessed to have friends who have stood with me through the years and who have guided me, laughed with me, held me when I’ve fallen apart, and picked me up when I couldn’t get up. They have reminded me more than a few times of my value, my worth, and my love.

I am also blessed that my work feels meaningful. I feel like I have a purpose bigger than myself, and part of that feeling comes from being in community with each of you each Sunday. That means a lot to me.

Why Isn’t Your Body Perfect?

There is no good reason, from everything science tells us, why the human body shouldn’t be perfect. The scientific model builds Nature up from the simplest, smallest components to the largest and most complex. There is no doubt that at the smallest scale subatomic particles, atoms and molecules, and are perfect, because they have endured without change for billions of years.

Did imperfections arise with the beginning of life on Earth? Single-cell microorganisms are thousands, perhaps millions, of times larger and more complex than the smallest molecules that they are built from. But one-celled creatures have endured for something like 3.5 billion years. Since they reproduce by cell division, the most ancient forms of amoebas, algae, protists, and so on are actually still with us–literally the first amoeba has never died or aged.  Life forms with complex structures constitute much less than one percent of living things; a bucket of ocean water is likely to contain hundreds of unknown variations on their DNA.

Imperfection gained the stage thanks to the same force that produced perfection: evolution. We suffer from disease, resist ageing, and fear death, but all of these are creative steps as far as evolution is concerned, since evolution triumphs through maximum diversity and an endless supply of new genes leading to improvements.

Quiet Genius: SAYING YES TO WHAT MATTERS

Two of the most significant teachers during my career in the time management field were Stephen Covey and Gay Hendricks.
With Stephen’s work, I began to realize how much time in each day I spent in conversation or in action with events and things which were really not that important to me. I also started to see the value in training my mind to only focus on the actions needed to support my heart remaining open. I no longer wanted to fill my days with irrelevant topics.

When I would find myself stressing about a particular topic, I would ask myself, “Will this make my eulogy? Will someone mention this at the end of my life?” Ninety percent of the time I would get a resounding “no” and so I would let it go.

Focus is a key factor in our lives. You can be in traffic and focus on how slow it is moving, or you can enjoy being in the flow. You can look at your relationship and see how challenging it is or you can celebrate the other ninety five percent, which is powerful and amazing about the relationship. Spending time on the important attracts more important moments into our lives.

Anything less than a conscious commitment to the important is an unconscious commitment to the unimportant. —Stephen Covey


Gay Hendricks taught me to categorize my day-to-day tasks into four zones: Incompetence, Competence, Excellence and Genius. It is crucial to learn how to make the distinction of how you spend your time and how you express your excellence and your genius. It requires an honest inventory of noticing which tasks and events we engage in, and noticing which are falling into the incompetent or just competent zones. Remember there is always someone else who would love to do the things for you that you are incompetent in, because for them it could be a task that fulfills their excellence and genius zones.

Gay gave an example of how he was at the post office one day and waiting in a long line to mail his package. As he reflected on what he was doing with his package and his use of time that day, he came to the following realization: he was competent to mail his package but his excellence and genius zone was to be at home writing his book. It was at this moment he realized he could engage someone else to mail packages. This someone else would free him to stay at home and work on his writing and stay in his zone of excellence.

By consciously staying in his zone of genius he could enable someone else with the patience and personal assisting organizational skills set (including mailing packages) to stay within their zone of genius (personally assisting) at the same time.

This practice has changed my entire way of working in my spiritual community. I now delegate more and empower others to fulfill many tasks that may be in my zone of competence but their zone of genius. This way, members of my spiritual community are empowered to stay in their zone of their genius while I can too. This is what Stephen Covey terms a win-win for all.

When I see myself fulfilling projects that are within my zone of (in)competence, I now realize I can create a job or a fulfilling task for somebody else who would really love to do it. This way of life—this way of living in my zone of genius (as Gay Hendrick calls it)— gives us the freedom to be a Difference Maker in someones’ life, while continually expanding our desires that keep us in our zone of excellence too.

“I Don’t Fit In.”

Do you believe that you are supposed to 'fit in?' You might feel differently after reading this article!

The other morning, I opened our carton of eggs to make my breakfast. I looked at the beautiful eggs we get from our local organic farmer, James Ranch. The eggs were all different colors—light green, white, dark brown, light brown and speckled brown. They were also all different sizes. I felt grateful that I got to look at all the different colors and sizes rather than the same-size, same-color eggs that come in the cartons of store eggs. The thought occurred to me—why is sameness so important to people? Why do they want eggs that are all the same size and all the same color?

I often hear from my clients, "I don't fit in." "I'm too different from everyone else." "I'm an alien."

"I'm different and an alien too," I tell them, "and I'm proud of it. I don't want to 'fit in' and be like everyone else. I just want to be me."

Many of us grew up believing that if we were 'different,' there was something wrong with us. In junior high and high school, all I wanted was to be just like everyone else. I never was, but I got good at faking it so that I could fit in.

I've Been Thinking...

Halloween used to be one of my favorite holidays. When my kids were young, I loved dressing up with them and going trick-or-treating. I enjoyed watching the looks of amazement on their faces as they ran from house to house in our neighborhood. They alternated between looks of terror when they encountered scary decorations, and then looks of thrill beyond belief when they scored a Kit Kat or Reese's peanut butter cup. 

Fear and joy all in one night! That’s what Halloween represented for our family.

I thought about that this week as we approached this holiday. I experienced great joy a few days ago as I got to watch my granddaughter dress up as a daisy for her very first Halloween. It was beyond adorable. I felt so much joy getting to share this experience with her.

Let the Light of Awareness Transform Your Life

We are born hungry. We not only require food that we take in with our mouths, but we all have an innate need to take in impressions -- to take in the nourishment that stimulates our mind, that moves our heart, and that works to give us a sense of satisfaction in life.

When we’re young, we have a natural appetite for life, and we are educated by going out and engaging in the world. We meet other human beings, we find lovers, we find ways to make a living that will hopefully satisfy and stimulate us.

Then, as we grow older, our appetite becomes more and more refined, and we find we can no longer be satisfied by the life that we see around us. We realize that another relationship, more money, more food, more travel, isn’t going to fix things. It eventually dawns on us we can’t give ourselves what we’re hungry for through the things that we see in the world.

What If Aging Is A Mistake?

Since no one wants to age, there is a tremendous incentive to prevent, slow down or even reverse it. But all these efforts run into the same obstacle. No one actually knows what aging is or precisely what causes it. On its face, this riddle shouldn’t exist. The universe is subject to entropy, which causes everything, including the universe itself, to run down like a child’s toy whose battery slowly runs down. Biology chimes in with the obvious fact that all higher living things grow old and die.

But reality changes depending on your viewpoint, and one viewpoint tells us that aging, especially human aging, could be a mistake. First, we need to counter the evidence that living things must grow old and die. This is more easily done than you might suppose. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of the counter-argument against aging.

  • Entropy refers to the dissipation of heat by which warm things grow colder. But those are inanimate things. Life preserves and increases energy. Putting on a coat in winter effectively defeats entropy, and so have all living forms for at least four billion years.
  • The universe may die a “heat death” as it approaches absolute zero, but in the meantime, complex forms keep arising and surviving. The force that creates them is evolution.
  • Unique among the living things yet discovered, Homo sapiens can consciously choose to evolve.
  • Long ago Homo sapiens escaped the prison of Darwinian survival of the fittest by moving in any direction that offers more complexity, creativity, and discovery.
