Beach Closed: No Lifeguard on Duty

arielle10.13

Several years ago we were vacationing on the insanely beautiful island of Capri in Italy.

One afternoon we went for a walk, searching for a beach, to take a swim in the refreshing, sparkling Mediterranean sea.

We eventually found one and hiked down to a sweet little cove with a sandy beach jammed packed with men, women and children, in all shapes and sizes.

As we waded into the water, I noticed a small canoe-like boat that was painted red and on the side were the words, in big block letters, Salvatore.

My first thought was, “I wonder who Salvatore is and why does he need his name so boldly on the boat?”

And, even though I don’t speak Italian, I soon figured out that Salvatore wasn’t some man’s name but rather it means “Savior,” and that this was a boat used by lifeguards.

As all of us continue to navigate through these scary and difficult times of the COVID-19 virus, it’s becoming clear that there aren’t enough lifeguards right now, and it’s really up to us to figure out how to rescue ourselves and our loved ones.

Why Daily Affirmations Are Important!

collette10.11

Have you ever wondered if repeating positive affirmations can really work?

Many of the world’s most successful people will tell you that they’ve used affirmations as a part of their spiritual journey to success. But getting results with affirmations requires more than just saying the words!

Will Smith has been quoted saying, “In my mind, I’ve always been an A-list Hollywood superstar. Y’all just didn’t know yet.”

This quote paints a beautiful picture of how and why affirmations work. It isn’t just about the words you say – it’s about choosing to believe and feel something before the external evidence of that thing shows up in our world.

Visualizing and believing in a reality you want before it shows up in your physical world is a magical process. Affirmations have the potential to help us shift our reality and create a prosperous and happy life, we just have to learn to use them correctly.

Brain Stuff, Mind Stuff, And You

deepak10.11

If you want to experience the highest values in life—love, compassion, beauty, creativity, joy, and higher consciousness—your brain isn’t the right place to turn. These experiences exist in your awareness, waiting to emerge. The brain cannot give you these experiences, because contrary to popular belief, the brain isn’t aware. It transmits thoughts the way a television transmits pictures on the screen. No one would say that TVs produce the shows they transmit, yet we say this about the brain all the time.

It is pure illusion to mistake the brain for the mind. The basic chemicals in a brain cell are the same as in the skin cells of your big toe, and the functioning of brain cells differs very little from the functions of every other cell in the body. A three-pound lump of gray matter cannot escape its status as a batch of chemicals, and we mustn’t attribute love, compassion creativity, etc. to a batch of chemicals, either. In fact, the brain isn’t even aware that it exists. Until the skull is opened to reveal it, there is no subjective experience that says, “Here I am. I am your brain.”

Why You May Not Feel Secure-And How You Can

tama10.7

I want to talk to you about money. Actually, I want to talk to you about your real bottom line. Because if you’re like most of us, you may be trapped in an equation that doesn’t equate. Yes, money is important. But there are pearls of greater price. Take this little journey with me-- because I want to talk to the common sense of your uncommon maverick heart.

First, let’s just acknowledge: It’s expensive to be unhappy. You have to continuously prop up a life that cannot and will never stand on its own.

Way back in my lawyer days, I remember rushing back to the office from a therapy session, sixty minutes of honesty with myself, wiping away tears, then slumping back into my zombie existence. I was crawling on thorns to survive my life. Then I had a realization. I make good money. But it costs too much.

Lately, I’ve had another revelation. My real bottom line is more than a sum-total of shekels. I’m paying attention to where I come alive. Yes, when you choose meaning over money in your lifetime, you may earn less dollars initially or maybe always. But contrary to what you’re trained to believe, money isn’t security. And it’s security you really want and need and crave.

I’m going to share with you some of what’s on my unconventional balance sheet. I hope it opens your mind to yours.

Your health, your happiness, your money

juliem10.7
In our Western society, we most often equate happiness with material things. And we devote our professional and financial lives to growing that happiness exponentially. We’re working so hard to be materially happy that we neglect ourselves, and our health begins to take a bit of a dive.

So what is the Western way when we have an ailment? Find a quick fix. There’s a reason why the pharmaceutical industry has exploded; we want to pop a pill to conceal the pain which does very little (if anything) to fix it. With drug stores on every corner and over-the-counter pain killers outnumbering the produce sections of grocery stores, we have been trained to cover up the pain and not treat the root issue.

What does this have to do with your money?

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: The Gift of Immersion

marknepo10.7

Over the years, I’ve been humbled to discover, time and again, that when I feel I have no more to give—just then, I am asked to give more.

And when I try, deeper gifts come out of me than I knew were there. In these unexpected excavations of my giving, I’ve been introduced to my deeper, foundational self that draws its fortitude and resilience from the Whole of Life.

I have also discovered that, try as we do to labor the mind to solve every circumstance, the mind can only go so far. And so, when stuck, give. For giving cleans all the stuck places and then we can see with new eyes, and perceive with a new mind, and listen with new ears.

Age Isn’t a Number, It’s an Attitude!

jhollnad10.5.21

Sometimes I look in the mirror and wonder where all the time has gone. It flies by so quickly and before we know it, our energy is waning and our gray hairs are multiplying!

Are you in the mindset that maybe you’re too old to pursue a relationship or try something new? Are you letting your age get in the way of your dreams? If you let your psychological fear hold you ransom, it will undoubtedly hold you back from what you really want to do.

It’s never too late…for anything!

A client once told me a story about her aunt who at the age of 70 went back to college to get a degree in English. I also have a friend in her mid-50s who’s now enrolled in an online program to get her master’s degree. Was it too late for them? Clearly, they didn’t think so.

When you make excuses, you block all of the positive people and situations from manifesting in your life. These people and situations could bring an unlimited amount of spirit energy, passion and joy to your soul. Remember, the soul is ageless. It’s eternal.

We Have to Get Louder

mariaS10.4
"If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else."
—Booker T. Washington

My friend Steve sent me an article the other day that I couldn’t get out of my mind or my heart. It didn't make me just pause and think for a moment. It made me do a full stop in my tracks.

The piece I'm talking about came out in early September, but it still resonates a month later. (You can read it here). One of the lines that really struck me was this: “We're going to need more good people becoming louder about what is and isn’t within the bounds of civilized society. We are going to have to name what is unacceptable and demand decency and safety for all of us.”

I couldn’t agree more. Dignity, decency, and safety have got to be the mission of each and every one of us, and we have to get louder about proclaiming that to be the case. There is no doubt in my mind that everywhere we look, we are up against rage, hate, division, and fear. We are up against our fellow citizens behaving in a way that I never thought was possible in the public arena. We are up against public officials who lie, demean, and are trying to ruin the very fabric of our democracy.

How One Blind Spot Distorts Reality

deepak10.4

There’s an old joke about a man who falls off the Empire State Building. As he passes an office window on the way down, someone shouts, “How are you going?” and the man answers, “I’m okay so far.” I don’t know anyone who doesn’t laugh at the punchline the first time they hear the joke, but there’s also a wince thinking about the thud that awaits the man at the end.

Science has been okay—so far—in explaining how nature works, riding the crest of success for several centuries now. But the thud is near at hand, as outlined in a very readable, perceptive online article titled “The Blind Spot,” jointly written by two physicists, Adam Frank and Marcelo Gleiser, and a philosopher, Evan Thompson. The blind spot referred to in the title has been of tremendous but hidden importance in your life.

The blind spot refers to science’s rejection of consciousness as a key factor in describing reality. Rigidly adhering to a belief that it holds the key for explaining everything, science hasn’t seen its own blind spot—or taken it seriously, with a few exceptions—and therefore the vast majority of working scientists don’t hear the thud that awaits them. The authors of the article do, and they go right to the heart of the problem. As they view it, science has been wrong on two counts. The first is the belief that science can accurately and objectively describe the real world as it exists. The second is the belief that physical reality is all that must be accounted for.

Learn As You Go

rhanson10.4

By “learn as you go,” I mean that each day is an opportunity to take in the good: to help useful or enjoyable experiences sink in and become a part of you. Then when you go to sleep, you’ll be a little stronger, a little more resilient, a little wiser, a little more loving, a little happier than you were when you woke up in the morning.

This kind of learning is not memorizing a multiplication table. It’s emotional learning, somatic learning. It’s becoming more skillful with the world around you and the world inside you. It’s social learning, motivational learning, even spiritual learning. It’s healing from the past and growing strengths for the future. It’s becoming more compassionate, confident, patient, capable, and joyful. This is the learning that matters most. If things fall apart, what’s already inside you is what you can really count on.

What You Are Feeling Is Grief

jperkins10.4 By Page Harbour
Paige Harbour is a university student who assists me as an editor and in social networking. She is also an astute observer of these times and a brilliant thinker and writer who has her hand on the pulse of the generation born around the beginning of this millennium. I've asked her to write a guest newsletter.  John Perkins

When COVID shut down my college campus my school bag was shoved deep into a closet. After more than a year of quarantine and confusion it is still filled with past assignments, printed worksheets ready for the recycling bin. It surprises me how far-away my pre-pandemic memory is situated – these assignments are now hardly recognizable to me. One of these papers was a ten-year plan, meant to be finished for a sociology class, still a blank page.

That semester had involved taking an environmental sciences course; an activity that can be summarized as three months of terrible news. News about all the ways in which humanity had profoundly damaged our only home, news about how all the wrong people were going to suffer immeasurably for these crimes against the planet. We sat listening, cycling through rapt attention and total dissociation. Massive extinction events, cataclysmic fires, rising tides. Threads of synthetic fabric and splintered plastic fragments are in the ground, the water, the food we eat. Did you know Iceland now holds funerals for melting glaciers? It felt as though the world was dying, yet I was expected to continue living.

Guided

IMG_3700-1200x900

Every moment of our lives is guided by an Intelligence that we may only partially recognize while we are in physical form. It has been called variously Infinite Consciousness, Soul Awareness, or more simply, God/Goddess. We are a part of that vast beingness, and before we move from formlessness to form (birth), we choose an overview for our lives that opens us to expansion and evolving. Our physical lives interweave with one another within a vast tapestry of intention and meaning woven by that Intelligence, which we are one with. There is no experience or event, however small or large, that is not connected to that cosmic interweaving.

True joy is bringing your attention to the inherent beauty, inherent privilege of what it is to be alive in this moment.

Our Connection To Lineage

pdblog10.1

Every now and again, we get to a point in our evolution where we can’t seem to figure out what’s going on and why we’re feeling the way that we are feeling. When I get to those points, I always have to look generationally to see what’s in the lineage because sometimes it doesn’t make any sense in the context of my life.

Our lineage can be the limiting factor. It’s important that we begin to recognize our lineage. We have ancestors that feel guilty about receiving, guilty about being successful, and we don’t even know how these things can influence us.

What you don’t realize, is the sum total of your lineage you have access to. It’s all in your DNA. You have access to every potential that everyone in your lineage had access to. We get to activate that dormant recorded potential and the recorded information that serves us and switch off parts that don’t. We all have these aspects that we can’t quite access. For me, it is very powerful to look at ancestors and to tap into ancestry.

EPIGENETICS: A Funny Thing Happened … On The Way To Doing Something Else

bruce9.30
In 1967, I was learning the technique of growing cells in plastic culture dishes at the University of Virginia. There are two fundamental steps in the process: Step 1) Creating a suspension of isolated single cells to be inoculated into a culture dish; and Step 2) Creating culture medium, the fluid environment in which cells grow.

Starting with embryonic muscle tissue, digestive enzymes are used to breakdown the connective tissue matrix of the muscle, which frees individual cells. In the enzyme-saline solution, the released free cells are spun down in a centrifuge tube forming a pellet at the bottom of tube. The cell pellet is resuspended in fresh culture medium and a sample is pipetted into each culture dish. The suspended cells settle down, attach to dish’s surface, and begin to grow. The cultured cells live in a fluid environment referred to as culture medium. Growth medium is the laboratory version of blood, the fluid environment that cells live in within the body.

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: You Taught Me

markneop9.30
When lost and unable to move,
you came and rubbed my shoulders
till my judgment of myself dispersed.

When too heavy with grief to fold the
laundry, you said, “Forget the dryer”
and hung the clothes on the line and
we watched the shirts and sheets
billow in the wind.

When ready to give up, you bought
me a small drum whose deep red tone
helped me re-hear the center of things.

Now you are broken and sad and I am
busy finding things for you because you
taught me that it’s the giving back and
forth that saves us.

Like mouth to mouth resuscitation,
we pass the breath of life from the
one who is lit to the one who is not.

The Rise of the Divine Feminine

Our world is experiencing a profound energetic shift. The Divine Feminine is rising and changing the very fabric of life, affecting the way we work, make money, relate to one another, and more.

The old, primarily masculine way of operating in the world is no longer working. Years ago, hard work used to get us what we wanted. Nowadays, the harder we push, the less things flow.

How to Help Kids Re-Adjust to In-Person Learning

BradleyN9.30 6 tips for helping kids adapt to going back to school

If your child has been participating in school through online learning for some or all of the past school year, the change back to in-person learning this year may be a big shift. Emotions ranging from excitement to nervousness and stress can all arise, and may even be amplified in this unusual time we are living through.

Despite the worries kids and their parents have about staying healthy in the pandemic, there is still excitement about students being back in the classroom, interacting with their teachers and peers. For many kids, this will be a welcome change from solitary learning. For others, the bustle of the classroom poses a big adjustment after logging in to school from the quiet of home for much of the past year. All this is on top of the anxiousness kids normally may feel when starting a new school year with new classmates, classes, teachers, and in some cases, new schools.
