Insomnia is widespread and affects millions across the globe. Having a regular sleep schedule has multiple benefits. Many people have been seeking new ways to overcome the condition and enjoy a good night’s sleep again. And the latest option is CBD oil, produced using a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant.
CBD oil represents a new solution for the frustrating symptoms of the condition like lethargy, irritability, and fatigue. Though sleeping pills (both prescription and over-the-counter) are widely available, they have potentially harmful side effects, from addiction to daytime drowsiness. Therefore, the benefits of CBD oil outweigh the risks of sleeping pills. It can be a non-narcotic option and is an attractive alternative.
So, how does CBD oil help with sleep ?
If you consider CBD to address your sleeping problems, this article sheds light on how CBD oil can help you with a night of better sleep.
The relationship between CBD and sleep
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body plays a significant role in maintaining certain body functions, such as appetite, mood, regulating circadian rhythms, and sleep. The ECS comprises a network of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system.
Cannabinoid CBD interacts with specific receptors and impacts the sleep cycle. It may improve sleep quality by decreasing the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, minimizing certain factors that interrupt sleep, and increasing deep, restful sleep.
Further, CBD also decreases pain and anxiety, which can hamper a good night’s sleep. CBD oil helps to improve sleep by reducing symptoms related to pain and stress.
Can CBD Treat Insomnia?
According to the research, the impact of CBD on sleep quality can be dose-dependent. Studies have found that higher doses have a soothing effect, whereas lower doses have a stimulating effect that increases wakefulness.
A study found that a moderate dose of 160 mg/day decreased the number of awakenings during the night and increased sleep time. Another study revealed that cannabis reduced the time it takes them to fall asleep whether or not the patients presented with insomnia complaints.
Therefore, we can say that short-term use of CBD may improve insomnia by increasing NREM, slow-wave sleep, and decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep.
What does the research say?
Many research studies support the ability of cannabinoids and CBD to improve sleep. A study was conducted on 409 people with insomnia, and the data collected from June 2016 to May 2018 revealed an interesting impact of CBD on rest. The participants were tasked with rating their insomnia symptoms on a scale of 1 to 10, and the average rating recorded was 6.6.
All the participants were treated with cannabis flowers using different methods, including joint, pipe, and vape. After using cannabis, the participants rated their symptoms on average to be 2.2, a decrease of 4.5. This indicates that the cannabinoids in cannabis may decrease the symptoms of insomnia.
