It's Time

There’s something about deep wounding that can be a pathway to deep, deep love.
It’s a very beautiful thing when the wound becomes the doorway."
—Henry Shukman

I've Been Thinking...

Dear friend,

How are you? I’d truly love to know.

How was your August? Did it go by slowly or was it way too rushed? Did you travel or stay home? Did you gather with friends or spend time alone?

Have you immersed yourself in the news of Afghanistan? Have you read the stories of the brave soldiers who gave their lives? Do you live in an area ravaged by Hurricane Ida or the fires and need support? (See below for ways to help.) Did the Texas ruling make you angry? Has the Delta variant got you isolating again? Have the ongoing vaccine and mask wars left you discouraged? (I’m happily vaccinated, and I see wearing my mask as a public service.)

However you feel at this moment, try to pace yourself and breathe. There is a lot going on in our world at large, and that’s probably true in your personal life as well. My hope is to always meet you where you are. I hope my words each Sunday help you feel seen, supported, hopeful, and less alone on your journey to what I call The Open Field.

As for me, I find myself feeling a whole range of emotions about our country and about life right now. But I am in a good place overall. I’m in a place of self-compassion, self-love, and self-acceptance.

These days, I greet myself in the mirror with words of gratitude and appreciation, not with a self-critical voice like I used to do. I’m calm, at ease, and at peace, which is huge for me. This is all despite my deep concern about Texas, the California recall, and about our country’s deep division, which I have a real desire to help heal.

Enjoy Four Kinds of Peace

What’s your sense of peace?

The Practice:
Enjoy four kinds of peace.

Why?

“Peace” can sound merely sentimental or clichéd (“visualize whirled peas”). But deep down, it’s what most of us long for. Consider the proverb: The highest happiness is peace.

Not a peace inside that ignores pain in oneself or others or is acquired by shutting down. This is a durable peace, a peace you can come home to even if it’s been covered over by fear, frustration, or heartache.

When you’re at peace – when you are engaged with life while also feeling relatively relaxed, calm, and safe – you are protected from stress, your immune system grows stronger, and you become more resilient. Your outlook brightens, and you see more opportunities. In relationships, feeling at peace prevents overreactions, increases the odds of being treated well by others, and supports you in being clear and direct when you need to be.

Reconnect Yourself with Timeless Wisdom and End Useless, Painful Thoughts

We must recognize the almost endless cycle of pressure, anxiety, anger, and regret that always appears with the promise that if we follow some branch of negativity, it will lead us back to the source of understanding where we’ll be free at last. In fact, that branch we’re tempted to follow belongs to something that can never complete itself, and that requires our energy to sustain it.

Instead of trying to complete the moment through what anxiety, fear, or anger tell us to do, we must be completely present to those thoughts, completely present to that pain – a pain that promises freedom in a time to come, but is really the continuation of the consciousness that is pain itself because it lives apart from the true Vine and the true life.

Instead of trying to untie all this experience that seems to be the product of unwanted conditions we try to control, our real task is to sever our relationship on the spot with anything in us that wants to continue trying to free itself in time.

This may sound impossible. We’re concerned about what will happen to us if we don’t serve that master.  We feel stress and anxiety, we wonder what will happen if we don’t do again what has never freed us in the past, but hope may work this time.

A Different Way Of Living

The most powerful person in the world is the person who doesn’t need anything from anyone anymore. That is power. Power isn’t control, rage and intimidation, that’s weakness not power. Power isn’t having everyone in your life being afraid of you.

Power is not needing anything or anyone in your life. Why? Because you already are everything. There is nothing missing in you. And this is a very different way of living your life. No matter what your circumstance, and how you are living, when you realize you are powerful, because you have the capacity to be peaceful, you are free. In that peace, everything starts to align and work out for you.

Your need to initiate something is a repetitive cycle or pattern. And, where you are initiating from  is a place of pain . . . you are initiating a relationship dynamic because you are avoiding feeling the pain of being alone.

How To Welcome Success Into Your Life By Creating A Blessing Ceremony

Do you want a little extra magic in your life?  Are you seeking a new career and sending off resumes?  Maybe you are applying to your dream college or program of study.  Wherever you are, knowing how to welcome success into your life, by creating a blessing ceremony can help you live abundantly.

I love the magic of ceremonies.  There is something about slowing down and being very intentional with our thoughts and actions, that I find beautiful.  It is almost like weaving love into my thoughts, dreams and actions before I send them off to the Universe.

There are ceremonies for almost anything in life.  You can have a releasing ceremony to help you let go of what is not serving you.  You can create an abundance ceremony when you are struggling with your ability to see abundance.

The list of possible ceremonies is endless, but today we will focus on a blessing ceremony.

I am in the final stages of putting together a book proposal.  This has not been a solo journey.  My editor has helped me.  I also rely on another person to make it look great and to put everything in one file.

My Guides, Angels, Universe and ancestors are also helping me. It is in recognizing the unseen, that I will create a blessing ceremony and make the send off of my book proposal a sacred event.

I am being very intentional on what I am bringing into my blessing ceremony.  Keep reading and discover some possible choices you might include in your next blessing ceremony.

Before you begin planning your ceremony, be very clear with your intention.  Also remember that in the ceremony we are offering our desires to the Universe.  We have no control in how they will manifest.  However, we know it will be for our highest good.

One more important aspect, all ceremonies should be held in the space of love and light.

Connecting With Abundance

As society has just experienced on a massive scale, anxiety about loss of income is very damaging. Everyone can see the loss in economic terms, but at a deeper level something invisible is at work. People’s sense of abundance and fulfillment is undermined. When we worry about not having enough, we immediately think in terms of money, but what about a lack of emotional fulfillment, a lack of love, lack of creative solutions? Abundance needs to prevail in those areas first and foremost.

The most crucial thing to understand is that abundance begins in your awareness. Look at the by now familiar story of lottery winners who are worse off ten years after their sudden windfall. Why? Because they couldn’t adapt. They were used to processing their lives on a limited scale, and suddenly they were asked to process millions of dollars, massive attention, public exposure, and the demands of people all around them.

Unless you are prepared to adapt, abundance itself can turn into a burden on you. The secret is to constantly build an attitude of abundance in small steps leading to a big goal: a sense of self that can accept higher and higher levels of opportunity. Here are seven steps you can build on:

This Four-Letter-Word Can Save You

Have you noticed all the tension in the air these days? Stress has become a regular companion for many of us, especially when our plates continue to overflow with responsibility. Add to that job stress, financial worries, family arguments, car trouble, the annoying driver who’s tailgating us or the person in our grocery line who’s taking their sweet old time…and our anxiety levels creep closer to the verge of explosion.

In a recent study by Gallup, people from various countries were asked to describe what stress means to them. They mentioned words such as problems, anger, fear and anxiety. Some people even related stress to feelings of overthinking, powerlessness and aging. But what this study didn’t show is that stress is often the result of a disconnection with our soul. When we’re united in partnership with our soul, all things fall into place.

As souls, we are all connected to each other. And as sensitive empaths, we can’t help but feel this surge of anxiety and stress around us that can blur our peaceful nature. How do we stop ourselves from overreacting? How do we let go? How do we get back our power and reconnect with our tranquil soul?

Bring Your Loneliness into the Light of Your Self

We're about to learn about a new kind of understanding with the power to transform “dark” moments into liberating self-discoveries. Let’s get started…

We don’t yet see “problems” for what they really are: a part of the Light within us that we have yet to perceive! Any thought or feeling that troubles us in mind or heart, any fear or worry, is like a candle not yet lit. What purpose has any flame or light—in any form we may find it—other than to enter into and transform what is dark into more of itself?

For instance, maybe we turn around one day and find ourselves caught in the dark grip of some kind of fear. Perhaps we see the one we love “looking the other way;” maybe a phone call delivers uncertain news about our deteriorating health; or someone tells us about a forthcoming change at work that threatens our sense of security.

In moments such as these our future grows as dark as it seems full of the loneliness, worry, and loss we see coming our way. But our lives need not be swallowed up in unconscious servitude to this kind of suffering. We have another choice if we will only dare be still and be the Light. Here now are some ways to practice realizing the truth of your Self. Each case begins with remembering to make the new choice that follows:

No Longer a Victim

Ever felt victimized by life’s tough breaks? I know I have. Seeing the successes other people are racking up while you continue to struggle with things that, theoretically, should be simple by now? It’s a bad feeling.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about unforeseen circumstances. Getting a flat tire on the way to the most important meeting or interview of your life. A medical problem blindsides you – and your bank account. You were picked over for the promotion that had your name written all over it.

Life can definitely throw you a curve ball and sometimes you don’t have nearly enough time to duck.

But you know what we can control? Our outlook. Not just our feelings on that one specific moment, but how we handle the stressors and setbacks. The first thing you need to come to terms with is this:

You are in control of your life: your journey, your emotions and your destiny.

Be at Peace with the Pain of Others

Can you stay open to the pain of others?

The Practice:
Be at peace with the pain of others.

Why?

Humans are an empathic, compassionate, and loving species, so it is natural to feel sad, worried, or fiery about the troubles and pain of other people. (And about those of cats and dogs and other animals, but I’ll focus on human beings here.)

Long ago, the Buddha spoke of the “first dart” of unavoidable physical pain. Given our hardwired nature as social beings, when those we care about are threatened or suffer, there is another kind of first dart: unavoidable emotional pain.

For example, if you heard about people who go to bed hungry – as a billion of us do each night – of course your heart would be moved. I’m usually a pretty calm guy, but when I visited Haiti, I was in a cold rage at the appalling conditions in which most people there lived. On a lesser scale but still real, a friend’s son has just started college and is calling home to tell his mom how lonely and miserable he feels; of course she’s worried and upset.

You Are Exactly Where You are Meant To Be. Trust Life

Just because you aren’t where you think you should be in your life doesn’t mean you’re not exactly where you are meant to be.

Sometimes we get caught up in the idea that we need to achieve certain things by a certain time of our lives. When we don’t it’s easy to feel like a failure or beat yourself up for not being where you expected.

Perhaps you wanted to:

– Be a millionaire by 35.

– Be a New York Times Bestselling author, selling millions of books.

– Win an Oscar.

– Marry your soulmate and have 2 kids by 40.

– Own your dream house.

We all have our own ideas and expectations.

8 Signs You Are an Empath and What to Do

Being the one people always turn to is a blessing, but take steps to protect yourself

Do sad movies make you really sad? Do you pick up on the emotions of people around you? Do you often take things to heart, and seem to feel things more deeply than others? If you answer yes, chances are you are an empath.

Empaths are those who easily absorb the emotions of people and situations around them. They tend to get caught up in these feelings and may even have trouble distinguishing their emotions from those of others.

Being an empath can be exhausting because you are always picking up on what others feel, whether it is positive or negative emotions. Because you are probably a “great listener” and empathize well, people feel free to tell you about their troubles and feelings. This may trigger strong feelings of your own, or put you in the uncomfortable position of being caught between friends in disagreements when they both come to you.

My 101 Personal Goals in Life

If you are bored with life, if you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things – you don’t have enough goals. –Lou Holtz

I’ve studied the science of success for over four decades now – and if there’s one thing I know for sure to be true, it’s this:

The only way to attain a high level of success in life is to set personal goals for yourself and refuse to let anything stop you from achieving them.

… Sounds simple, right?

Yet so few people seem to be able to pull it off.

Most people in life don’t bother to set personal goals for themselves. They’re too busy reacting to daily chaos and won’t open their eyes toward the horizon to plan for a future.

Even if they do look ahead and set future goals for themselves, they lack the focus and motivation required to achieve their aspirations in life and give up when the first challenging obstacle appears on their path.

Or they set personal goals that don’t take them in the direction of the life they want to live. Their personal goals list reflects what they think they should want to achieve in life, rather than what they actually want to experience.

I don’t want that to happen to you. That’s why today I’m going to teach you how to set personal goals that are guaranteed to lead you in the direction of your dreams.

You’ll also learn how to identify future goals for different areas of your life so that you’re able to experience more balance, harmony, and greater fulfillment in everything you do!

Are You Committed To Living The Life Of Your Dreams?!

Who do you need to become in order to have the life you’ve always dreamed of?

Making the life of your dreams a reality will require your commitment. It will ask you to claim that life and the version of you who lives it in advance – before you see the evidence with your eyes. It will require you to consistently invest in yourself and your transformation.

This isn’t about becoming something you aren’t or living a life that wasn’t meant for you. Instead, it’s about becoming the person you were always meant to be and claiming the life that’s been waiting for you.

Dig deep. But dig with a spoon, not a shovel.

Consciousness: Ten Questions, One Answer

After decades spent ignoring the whole issue of consciousness, recent years have seen a boom, or at least a boomlet, of scientific interest. So it wasn’t entirely a breakthrough when the July 10 issue of the popular weekly New Scientist devoted its cover article to consciousness, posing “the ten biggest questions about the greatest mystery in the universe.”

The headline is meant to be provocative, but the vast majority of scientists won’t be interested in consciousness, and their indifference can be simply explained. When conducting an experiment in the laboratory, the air in the room is irrelevant (unless you are experimenting on air). Likewise, consciousness is just as irrelevant. Like air, it is necessary, but it is beside the point. Air and consciousness are just a given.

Ironically, this dismissal actually holds the answer to all ten questions posed by the New Scientist article.  First let me relate the ten question, which don’t have to be considered in detail, since one answer applies to all ten.

Grow Inner Strengths

What would make a difference inside you?
The Practice:
Grow Inner Strengths.
Why?

I’ve hiked a lot and have often had to depend on what was in my pack. Inner strengths are the supplies you’ve got in your pack as you make your way down the twisting and often hard road of life. They include a positive mood, common sense, integrity, inner peace, determination, and a warm heart. Researchers have identified other strengths as well, such as self-compassion, secure attachment, emotional intelligence, learned optimism, the relaxation response, self-esteem, distress tolerance, self-regulation, resilience, and executive functions. I’m using the word strength broadly to include positive feelings such as calm, contentment, and caring, as well as skills, useful perspectives and inclinations, and embodied qualities such as vitality or relaxation. Unlike fleeting mental states, inner strengths are stable traits, an enduring source of well-being, wise and effective action, and contributions to others.

Leaving Well

“Today is the day you rid yourself of anything that distracts from your best life."
—Joshua Becker

I've Been Thinking...

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about leaving. I don’t mean leaving on vacation (although I am looking forward to my annual August break). I’ve actually been thinking more deeply and broadly about the different ways we all leave a piece of ourselves behind each and every day.

We leave jobs or careers that no longer bring us joy. We leave relationships that don’t work for us anymore. We leave religious or political affiliations that no longer stand for what we believe. This week, under President Biden’s direction, the U.S. announced plans to leave Afghanistan. Former President Bush said it was a mistake, but Biden said it was the right move. Meanwhile, Texas legislators dramatically up and left the state capitol while the legislature was in session to protest voting rights suppression.

Daily Affirmations for Success

Ask any highly successful person how they maintain their motivation and focus to achieve their ambitious goals, and chances are their answer will be, “daily affirmations!”

I have met countless successful business people, Olympic and professional athletes, NY Times bestselling authors, and visionary changemakers who all use daily positive affirmations to stay energized and focused on their goals, no matter what’s happening in the world around them. They have all told me that their daily affirmations practice has had a game-changing impact on their lives.

Today I’d like to teach you how daily affirmations for success actually work and show you how to write affirmations that will make it so much easier for you to achieve your life goals.

I’ll also answer common questions such as:

“What is a daily affirmation?”
“Are morning affirmations better than evening affirmations?”
“How to write affirmations that work?”

… and so much more!

Have You Had Enough?

For years, I’ve watched while we, particularly women, choose to put others needs in front of our own. When in the inside we are starving for our lives to be different than what we’ve created. Depending on your stage of life it could be different, but usually when we are starting in our 40s we start to see it differently, but by the time we’re in our 50s, we’ve had enough.

I watch as we chip away at what our soul is screaming for us to do and we still choose to do other things despite being called to another path. We get trapped by the rat race of our lives which results in stuffing down our emotions. Those stuffed down emotions either work themselves out by feeling the feelings or we act them out through our health or our wealth. We start being put on medications from our doctors, and we grieve what we know our financial lives could have been if you had made different choices.

Embrace the Challenging Conditions that Change You

Do you feel like you can’t embrace anything these days? You go to the store and encounter a scowling face. You hear some bad news, or you get a call, and you have a terrible reaction. You don’t want to embrace it. You want to erase it! How many of you wish you had a giant eraser? And isn’t that what we’ve been trying to do most of our lives when things go wrong?

Wouldn’t it be nice to live from something that, at any moment, never feels like whatever it’s looking at is too much for it to embrace?
